Twenty-five-year-old Shakira Martin, Miss Jamaica Universe 2011, has her sights firmly set on representing Jamaica to the best of her abilities at the 60th staging of the Miss Universe pageant, which is scheduled to take place on Monday, September 12 at Credicard Hall in São Paulo, Brazil. Shakira will be among the 89 contestants taking part in the prestigious event, and all the beauties are expected to arrive in Brazil between August 21 and 23.

After the stellar showing of Miss Jamaica Universe 2010, Yendi Phillipps, who was first runner-up in the global competition behind winner Ximena Navarrete of Mexico, expectations for Jamaica are running high this year. In the face of the attendant pressure, Shakira remains poised and confident as she prepares to represent her country. Pree Jamaica caught up with the former pre-school teacher, who kindly entertained questions on the following topics:

Reason for participating
I saw the impact that Yendi has had on Jamaica and how well she did in Las Vegas, and I decided that I wanted to have a voice spread the message about Jamaica and also about sickle cell anaemia.

Best attribute
My personality. I almost get along with everyone (laughs). I love people so I am always interested in meeting new people and building relationships…I just love people.

Most passionate about…
Life…life is so precious and fragile. Especially with me having sickle cell…I’ve come close to losing it on more than one occasion. This has really made me appreciate it and not take it for granted.

Staying positive
I stick to the positive and never dwell on any negativity that’s going on around me…complete blinders on in that area. The positive things are what keep me driven. I may have a million people who are against me, but as long as I have one supporter that is what will keep me going.

After Yendi, the pressure…
I absolutely feel the pressure, but it’s good to feel pressure…it keeps you on your toes. Yendi is a tough act to follow, but I’m trying to keep up with her…I’m not trying to be her. I’m trying to be the best Shakira that I can be. There’s not going to be another Yendi Phillipps…every girl who was selected [as Miss Jamaica Universe] was selected because she was herself, so I’m going to be the best Shakira Martin that I can be.
