Consistent with our modus operandi for events at Red Bones Blues Cafe, Pree Jamaica missed the first half of the “Double or Nothing” show on August 19, which featured the Jason Lee Worton-fronted StoneDub band. We were, however, just in time to catch the other band billed on the night, Blu Grass in the Sky, and they delivered an entertaining set that showcased their growing catalogue of reggae, rock, dancehall and blues fusion music.

The band took fans along on a musical road trip that had them cruising to the eclectic sound and feeling the aural rush from lead vocalist Simon Samuel’s 90 mph delivery, his words careening around the corners of varying human experiences. They performed the eponymous “Blu Grass in the Sky”, “Fire”, “King”, “Johnny”, the mento-influenced “Pretty Nana” and “High Grade Love“, their first official single and most popular song to date. Blu Grass in the Sky closed their 11-song set with “Riding in the Cloud”, which received loud cheers from the Redbones audience.
