Controversial deejay Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer will be looking to parlay his musical Midas touch and popularity into the world of reality television with the hotly anticipated debut of “Teacha’s Pet” on Friday, September 23 at on CVM-TV (10 p.m.), LIME TV (10:30 p.m.) and online via a pay-per-view website (11:00 p.m.). Based on the buzz being generated, smart money is on fans and non-fans alike tuning in to watch what promises to be an interesting glimpse into Kartel’s search for “love”.

Vybz Kartel and Amelia 'Milk' Sewell. Milk is the 'substitute teacha' in Kartel's reality series 'Teacha's Pet', which follows the deejay's search for love.

Produced by Carleene Samuels and directed by Jason ‘Jay Will’ Williams of Creative Source Productions, the programme features a cast of 20 female contestants who live together in a palatial upper St. Andrew home and complete daily challenges as they try to win the love of Vybz Kartel. The show derives its name from Kartel’s “Addi di Teacha” moniker and adopts a format that is not too dissimilar to dating shows such as “The Bachelor” and “Flavor of Love”.

In June when producers issued a casting call online for Kartel’s ‘love hopefuls’, over 1000 applications were submitted quickly from young women both locally and internationally. Kartel and show producers handpicked the finalists who will appear on the show. Other local celebrities including Amelia ‘Milk’ Sewell as the substitute teacher, and recording artiste ‘Popcaan’ as the confidant, will be featured weekly in the hour-long programme, which will run for 12 episodes.

The series is sponsored in part by LIME and Red Stripe BOLD. Sections of the show that are too hot for television will be aired on LIME TV and pay-per-view.

“Jamaicans can expect to be entertained. ‘Teacha’s Pet’ is a high quality all-Jamaican production that will be different from anything presently on local television. It’s also a global show, as we have pay-per-view on so all dancehall fans and the whole Caribbean Diaspora can tune in,” the show’s producer Carleene Samuels told Pree Jamaica.

A gifted lyricist heralded as one of the island’s top deejays, Kartel – who was not present at the launch of the show at LIME’s head office on Tuesday – indicated in a press statement that the ‘Teacha’s Pet’ experience has been a rewarding one for him.

“This is yet another first in dancehall history. I have always had an interest in pursuing film-based projects along with my music. I am very pleased with the production and I look forward to the response of my fans and the viewers who will tune in every Friday night”.
