Barbadian Jamaal Bowen stated that his participation in the 2011 Angostura Mixmaster Regional Cocktail Challenge at Margaritaville, Ocho Rios on October 29 was fuelled by two objectives – the search for adventure and the desire to create history. The Sandy Lane Hotel bartender did just that en route to winning the competition, with Jamaican Alexa-Rae Clennon of Bars-to-Go securing second place and Kendie Browne Williams from the Four Seasons in St. Kitts and Nevis finishing third.

Bowen walked away with the grand prize of US$5,000 and confirmed his place in the Global challenge in February 2012 in Trinidad, where he will have a chance to win the even more attractive US$10,000 prize purse and the coveted title of Angostura Grand Master Champion.

Competitors were allowed seven minutes to prepare two cocktails each during an Open (Freestyle) category and a Rum Cocktail category, with all recipes including a minimum of five dashes of Angostura Aromatic Bitters or Orange Bitters. Drinks were scored on appearance, aroma, taste and presentation skills. This year’s competition featured eight bartenders from seven islands – Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica (2), St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent.

“Lascelles is happy to host a competition of this standard. We are committed to excellence and this competition gives us a chance to highlight top level bartending in Jamaica and the Caribbean while allowing us to be part of a programme of development for bartenders,” said Andre Cowan, Marketing Manager for Lascelles, in a press statement.

Known as the taste that flavours the world, Angostura has a long tradition of spicing up cuisines in the Caribbean and internationally. It is a highly concentrated flavouring made from a selection of aromatic herbs and spices which makes it ideal for all culinary purposes.
