Nineteen of Jamaica’s top surfers faced off in classic conditions at the first event of the Jamaica Surfing Association (JSA) 2012 National Open Series (NOS) at the Lighthouse Surfing Beach at Palisadoes on January 14. Boston Bay’s Shane Simmonds secured top honours and the 1000 points for the win, with Icah Wilmot, Inilek Wilmot, Ackeam Phillips and Garren Pryce rounding out the top five.

Shane Simmonds from Boston Bay, Portland, takes the first National Open Series (NOS) event for 2012 at Lighthouse in Kingston.

Defending national champ Icah Wilmot finished second.

In the final, 29 waves were caught with high scores difficult to come by in the breezy conditions. Shane started the heat strongly and by his third wave had a commanding lead. Defending national champ Icah was floundering and couldn’t seem to find a wave to give him a chance, while Inilek sat patiently and found two waves out of his three that made a statement.

Aerial specialist Ackeam gave good effort but couldn’t land any of his attempts and had to depend on good old fashioned ripping to get two scores. Garren, like Icah, was searching for a wave or two but enjoyed little success. Michael Panton, who finished sixth, couldn’t seem to find his groove in the six-man final. As the heat wound down, Icah got two quick ones and moved up the standings, but this wasn’t enough to wrestle the lead from Shane.

The next event of the JSA 2012 NOS will be held on Saturday, February 11 at Peenie Wally surf beach, Buff Bay, Portland.
