The impressive works of young and upcoming artists are currently on display at The Mutual Gallery and Art Centre’s “Art Fresh 2012″ exhibition, which opened on March 8 and will run through to April 7. The exhibition brings together self-taught artists with less than a decade of professional experience, formally trained artists who graduated from art school less than ten years ago, and artists who are looking to make a fresh start after a period of inactivity.

Toorel Asher stands next to her work “Pretty Pum Pum”. Taken from her “Butcher Shop” series, the work is her retort to the popular male perception of women as merely sexual objects.

The aim of Art Fresh is to encourage artists to produce original artworks and to promote a crop of artists who are genuinely keen in pursuing a career in art. Thirteen artists are participating in this year’s exhibition, with nine of them being selected by a jury comprised of Tina Spiro and Paula Daley, both artists and teachers, and Gilou Bauer, Director/Curator of the Mutual Gallery.

The nine selected artists are Alicia Brown, Kimani Beckford, Leon Dingwall, Raymond Graham, Cavel Johnson, Krystal Dadag, Olivia McGilchrist, Toorel Asher and Robert “Toby” Grant. The invited artists are Robert Joyette, Oliver Myrie, Andrae Green and Vilya Thomas.

Guest speaker for the opening event was well known dental surgeon, Dr. Brian Morgan, who encouraged the gathering to invest in the younger artists. The exhibition is staged in conjunction with National Commercial Bank, Carreras Group, Super Plus Food Stores, Capital and Credit Merchant Bank, Ideal Portfolio Services, RBC Royal Bank, NEM, BCIC, Scotia Private Banking Group, Island Mist, Kool 97 FM and Wray and Nephew.
