There was no stopping Albert Brown, ace bartender from TGIF, as he cruised to a near flawless victory with amazing skill, style and concentration in the national finals of the Skyy Vodka Global Flair Challenge, which was held at The Deck in New Kingston on September 1.

Going up against the spirited and ambitious Kimalie Robinson from Cornwall Beach Bar in Montego Bay and Kevin Simmonds and Samir Lovejoy, both also from TGIF, Brown showed the kind of composure befitting a two-time defending champion. His competitors earnestly tried to keep up, but succumbed to nerves and fell in the chasm between their actual talent and the highest level of performance. The dexterous Brown wowed the gathering with spectacular bottle flipping, at one point juggling four bottles! Beyond the dazzling exhibition, Brown showed working flair skills by serving up mixes to judges Lisa Bell, Patrice McHugh, Tifa and Hans Crosby, founder of the League of Extraordinary Bartenders.

For his effort, Brown will receive an all-expense paid trip to the regional finals in St. Lucia, where he will defend his title. The winner of the regional finals will advance to the Skyy Vodka Global Flair Challenge Finals, which will be held in October 2010 in Barcelona, Spain.

So what does it actually take to be this good at flair bartending? Albert believes that he’s paid the cost to be the flairtending boss.

“It takes many hours of practice and determination…overcoming busted lips, bottles breaking mid-air in your face…It is a lot of hard work and I’m glad it paid off,” said Brown.
