Ryan and Gregory Moore are founders of the savvy gaming website www.playjamaica.com. In this, the first article in the PreeTECH series, Pree Jamaica caught up with the ‘Brothers Moore’ to discuss the inception and implementation of an idea that has ‘caught fire’ – the enthusiastically embraced and now rapidly growing trend of local online gaming.

The brothers officially launched the Play Jamaica website in early 2010. The concept was born out of the siblings’ affinity for hardcore network gaming. Play Jamaica, however, was shaped into a more family-oriented package offering popular user-friendly games. The name of their new venture is an obvious merger of ‘play’, which is a direct reference to game play, and ‘Jamaica’.

With gaming websites aplenty in cyberspace, Ryan states that incorporating a distinguishing feature was necessary to ensure the success of the business. This feature is the awarding of prizes such as phone cards, gas vouchers, tickets to all-inclusive parties etc, which are provided courtesy of Play Jamaica’s affiliate sponsors.

“We decided that offering prizes to tournament winners was the way to go. The tournaments are time-specific, ranging from a few days to a week…the person with the most points wins and gets the prize,” explains Ryan. This incentive has made the website a popular pastime for locals, who purchase their credits to play from identified vendors as well as online at www.playjamaica.com.

The brothers have managed to attract a significant fanbase for the website through social media vehicles, specifically Twitter and Facebook. Greg, who is more of a ‘techie’, underscores the importance of maintaining a strong online presence in delivering a relevant and authentic service.

“Social media blends very well with business. It reaches a large group [of especially young persons] who are not biased soley towards the traditional forms of advertising”, explains Greg. Speaking to the visual aesthetics of the website, he continues: “I also worked with MLK Systems, our web developer, to ensure we have that fun look for the users of our website.”

The growing number of users is affirmation that the idea of the Moore brothers has taken root and is poised to move from strength to strength.

“It was memorable to see persons making accounts, logging in and sending emails to us – it gave us a good feeling,” says a chuckling Ryan. Play Jamaica is buoyed by the number of hits to the site, which has allowed it to attract advertising support.

The current volume of Play Jamaica users, who span all ages and social classes, has smashed the brothers’ user group target. The website’s success has prompted the Moores to establish new goals, including the expansion of Play Jamaica to the Caribbean region and United States of America, as well as a redesign of the website to incorporate interactive concepts.

PreeTECH is a Pree Jamaica series which highlights innovative developments and advancements in the world of technology.
