The punishing and gruelling Rally Jamaica 2012 pushed man and machine to the limit, but in the end Jamaican driver Jeffrey Panton and co-driver Mike Fennell Jr. conquered the course in a Ford Focus WRC, ensuring the return of the championship trophy to home soil. Last year’s winner, Jamaican-born Trinidadian driver John Powell and co-driver Nicholas Telfer, rolled out of contention in spectacular fashion, and was among several high profile teams to crash out on the first day.

The victory was the seventh for Panton, who previously won titles in 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2008. James Betts (Barbados) and Jason Costelloe (Trinidad & Tobago) took the runner-up spot in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5, while Joel Jackson and Robert Thelwell of Jamaica finished third in a Subaru Impreza.

Matthew Gore and Raymond Farquharson of Jamaica had to overcome adversity and pain en route to winning the overall 2012 Rally Sport Championship, after Farquharson suffered severe burns to the face as a result of hot spray from the overflow bottle of the Toyota Starlet. He soldiered on despite his injuries, receiving sufficient medical treatment between stages.

Rally Jamaica 2012, which took place from November 30 to December 2, featured a parc expose in New Kingston, stages in Bybrook, Wakefield, New Works and Bernard Lodge in St Catherine, and a super special stage in Downtown Kingston.
