Music-induced euphoria swept across Richmond Estate in Priory, St. Ann during the masterful performance of lovers’ rock royalty Beres Hammond on the opening night of the 20th staging of Rebel Salute on January 18, 2013. By the time singing sensation Tarrus Riley picked up the mantle and proceeded to delight the crowd with a high-quality set, the consensus in the venue was that both performances were worth the price of admission.

The enjoyable night of music also featured performances from festival promoter Tony Rebel, No-Maddz, Shinehead, Aswad, Marcia Griffiths, Etana and Professor Nuts, among others. A downpour near the end of Tarrus Riley’s set after 6:00 a.m. on Saturday brought the show to a premature close, with Chronixx, Kabaka Pyramid, Protoje and Luciano yet to perform. Patrons made their way en masse to the parking lot, and an ensuing traffic snarl developed as persons attempted to leave the venue haphazardly in the absence of any clearly coordinated exit system.

Sporting a new two-day format and a new venue (it was previously held at Port Kaiser Sports Club in St. Elizabeth), the revamped festival got off to an auspicious start and received a strong turnout. Acts billed for the second night on January 19 included Sizzla, Busy Signal, I-Octane, Raging Fyah, Queen Ifrica, Mighty Diamonds and Di Blueprint.
