Kemetic Yoga in the Sunken Gardens

For a few hours in the afternoon on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, the Sunken Gardens at Hope Gardens in St. Andrew was transformed into a yoga sanctuary that celebrated the Kemetic yoga system, which is based on the timeless tradition of ancient Egypt (called Kemet by the original inhabitants). Dubbed Soul Yoga Fest Jamaica, the event offered a free session with Yirser Ra Hotep (Elvrid Lawrence), a master instructor of Yoga with some 30 years of experience and the creator of the YogaSkills Method.

The event represents the culmination of the YogaSkills School of Kemetic Yoga Teacher Training and Certification programme that took place recently in Montego Bay. The Soul Yoga Fest Jamaica event page on Facebook indicated that its goal is to “demystify the practice of Yoga and demonstrate its use as a practice for improving physical and mental health and developing fitness”.

  1. I want to thank you for writing this great article and publishing it on your website. We hope to do Soul Yoga Fest again in August 2013 and make it bigger and better for the people of Jamaica. YogaSkills School of Kemetic Yoga believes that Yoga is for everybody and that Yoga has an African origin that people should be made aware of.
