It’s going to get even harder for many local fans of Maroon 5 to breathe following the recent announcement that the Los Angeles-based pop-rockers will be in the line-up for the 15th staging of the JAMAICA Jazz & Blues Festival in January 2011 at the Greenfield (Trelawny Multi-purpose) Stadium. Aficionados of the Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum selling quintet are probably hyperventilating at the thought of the band performing hits such as “Harder To Breathe”, the beautifully written and sung “She Will Be Loved”, “This Love”, “Sunday Morning”, “Misery”, “Wake Up Call” and “Makes Me Wonder”.

In addition to selling over 10 million albums in the United States and 15 million worldwide, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine has enjoyed successful crossover hits with Kanye West, Alicia Keys and Rihanna.

In the face of the band’s proven pedigree, however, sceptics have been questioning their inclusion in the festival. Their reason? Despite Maroon 5’s mainstream international success, some are of the view that they have limited appeal and will only connect with a small demographic within the JAMAICA Jazz & Blues crowd. The festival, which has established a reputation of serving up a melange of musical genres, is no stranger to booking chart-topping contemporary acts, but Maroon 5 may be the  first pop-rock band to get such a nod in recent memory.

The  show’s line-up continues to undergo great scrutiny from its fastidious and variegated fan base, and appeasing everyone has always been a tough task for festival organisers Turnkey Promotions.  In the main, they’ve been able to pull together some pretty impressive names over the years. In the coming weeks, we’ll hear more about who will be joining Maroon 5 and Jamaican songstress Diana King on the bill.

So what say you? Is the buzz around Maroon 5’s scheduled appearance palpable? Is the band going to be a bonafide crowd puller and a guaranteed crowd pleaser? Please share your point of view in the poll below.
