Written by Jonathan Burke and illustrated by Nicholas Martin, the children’s picture book “Bolo the Monkey” was launched in a vibrant and friendly setting in St Andrew on Saturday, June 15. Members of the local literati and cultural community gathered under a tent erected beneath a huge mango tree at the Paddington Terrace venue and intently listened to communications expert Kalando Wilmoth’s reading from the book, which was accompanied by the skillful drumming of percussionist M’bala.

Produced by independent press Blue Moon Publishing, “Bolo the Monkey” explores the quest of its primate protagonist to defy tradition by becoming a farmer rather than a forager. Burke explained that fatherhood brought him to writing, as Bolo was born from stories that he used to tell his sons. Nicholas Martin pointed out that although it is a book for children, Bolo can inspire anyone because it teaches the power of self-confidence.

Children’s author Diane Brown had much praise for the book. “This story is moving and timeless and will appeal to all ages,” Brown said, “and it is delightfully enhanced by the illustrations.”
