The successful staging and positive outcomes of the inaugural Kingstoon Animation Festival and Conference clearly illustrate that Jamaica has the creative talent to frame a bright future for the country in the multi-billion dollar global animation industry. The two-day event, which took place on June 20 & 21 at the UWI Mona Visitor’s Lodge, attracted over 900 participants, many of whom had the opportunity to showcase their talent and learn from industry leaders such as Bento Box and Toon Boom, a software company with a clientele that includes Disney, Warner Bros. Animation and Fox studios.

The local creative output in the areas of animation, character development and script writing impressed the seasoned international judging panel, which was comprised of Joel Kuwahara, co-founder of Bento Box; Professor Mark Komza from Sheridan College; Josh Lamb, co-founder of The Shadow Gang; and Toon Boom’s Joan Vogelesang. Emerging as winners from the finalist projects were Tanya Batson-Savage (Best Script and Storyboard), Kemar McInnis (Best Experimental Animation), George Hay (Best Character) and Kira Clayton (Best Final Animation Product).

Kingstoon, which is being organised by the government of Jamaica in partnership with the World Bank, Canadian High Commission and JAMPRO, is geared towards raising local awareness of the emerging opportunities in animation, particularly among the youth. The two-day event will also provide a platform for showcasing Jamaican and Caribbean talent and identifying key policy decisions needed to support the animation industry in Jamaica.
