Fourteen tracks spanning the early 1970s to 2012 are featured on Blue Ark FM, the reggae/dancehall radio station in the hotly anticipated, mega-selling video game Grand Theft Auto V. Hosted by eccentric reggae genius Lee “Scratch” Perry, the station’s formidable playlist includes tracks from Perry himself, Dennis Brown, Yellowman, Gregory Isaacs, Chronixx, Protoje, Konshens and a collaboration by Vybz Kartel and Popcaan, among others.

Released by Take Two Interactive Inc.’s Rockstar Games studio on September 17, the game racked up an amazing US$1 billion in sales in the first three days in stores. Gamers will undoubtedly enjoy the selections on Blue Ark FM while cruising in the cars featured in Grand Theft Auto V, a game that has courted controversy for its violent and sexual content.

Protoje, whose track “Kingston Be Wise” is on the Blue Ark FM playlist, is looking beyond the controversy and embracing the large audience that the platform will bring to his music.

“Grand Theft Auto Five is already set to break sales records,” said Protoje, a leading figure in the Reggae Revival movement. “It will be a welcome boost for me because it means millions more potential ears for my music. Many of these people would probably not take the time to check out my songs otherwise.”

With many worthy songs in his catalog, Protoje is pleased about the choice made by Rockstar Games. “This short story was based on the events of May 23rd, 2010, when the Jamaican government deployed its military into Tivoli Gardens in the capital city of Kingston,” the crafty songwriter recalled. “For me it is very important that the message and information contained in this song reaches to as many people as possible.”

Reggae/dancehall radio stations featured in previous iterations of the game include K-Jah, K-Jah West, Tuff Gong Radio, Massive B Soundsystem, RamJam FM, Bush Sounds and Heavy Heavy Monster Sound.
