Jamaican T20 run machine Chris Gayle hit his 200th six in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during a breezy knock of 21 for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 13. Gayle is 66 sixes clear of his nearest rival in the IPL, Suresh Raina, who has accumulated 134 sixes to date. This milestone is the latest confirmation of the West Indian cricketer’s legendary six-hitting status, which is reflected across all formats of the game.

In Twenty20 Internationals, Gayle is in joint first place with New Zealand’s Brendon McCallum. Both men have struck 87 sixes, although Gayle has played 25 fewer matches. In both domestic and international Twenty20 matches, Gayle has tallied an imposing 493 sixes, which places him well ahead of fellow West Indian Kieron Pollard (336) and McCullum (255). The big left-handed batsman has hit over 100 Twenty20 sixes in three consecutive calendar years from 2011 and 2013.

Gayle’s total of 238 One Day International (ODI) sixes is good enough for third behind Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi (351) and Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya (270), both of whom have played significantly more matches that Gayle. In the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, Gayle equalled the record for most sixes in an ODI innings when he smashed 16 maximums in his 147-ball 215 against Zimbabwe. In test cricket, Gayle is only three sixes away from overhauling Australian Adam Gilchrist’s record of 100 sixes.

Across all international formats, Gayle has struck 423 mighty sixes, which leaves him 29 sixes adrift of Afridi’s record of 452.
