HBO premieres ballers, The Brink and True Detective: S2

Tonight HBO introduces two new 10-episode half-hour series, ballers and The Brink, to their roster. Additionally the premiere of the cult favourite True Detective will kick off with an eight-episode second season.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars in the half-hour comedy ballers. The series explores the lifestyles of a group of past and present Miami-based football players. The Rock plays Spencer Strasmore, a retired football player-turned-financial manager to current players. His inner circle sports a potpourri of colourful, talented retirees and rookies navigating the ups and downs of day to day life.

The Rock along with Transformer actor Mark Wahlberg are a part of the producing team.


The series also features hollywood sons Troy Garity and John David Washington – children of legendary actors Jane Fonda and Denzel Washingston, respectively. Johnson along with Transformer actor Mark Wahlberg are a part of the producing team. The series is created by Steve Levinson, best known for the hits Entourage and Boardwalk Empire

The Brink

Tim Robbins stars as U.S. Secretary of State Walter Larson, one of three main characters in the dark comedy. Jack Black, who portrays a foreign service officer stationed in Islamabad and Pablo Schreiber a Navy fighter pilot, who deals prescription drugs on the side completes the line up.

The series begins with a rogue general taking control of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal in a bit to provoke political turmoil. In response, the trio forge an alliance to prevent a possible world crisis playing out. Esai Morales stars as President Navarro. Robbins and Black are among the executive producing staff.

True Detective

The highly anticipated season 2 premiere of the award-winning drama has a new cast featuring Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch. This season will focus on a high-profile murder in a decrepit, corrupt city in LA County. The bizarre murder brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in order to solve the mystery in the California wilderness.

Colin Farrell stars as detective Ray Velcoro, Vince Vaughn as criminal and entrepreneur Frank Semyon, Rachel McAdams as Ventura County Sheriff’s detective Ani Bezzerides and Taylor Kitsch as Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol – whose leave of absence in the midst of a scandal gets a reprieve when he discovers a crime scene. Like the previous season, this season boasts engaging leads and a complex, twisting plot in the fictional city in LA County.

True Detective first season won critical and audience praise for its compelling storyline and vivid, award-winning performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. True Detective was nominated for 12 Emmys.
