The Jamaica Olympic Ice Hockey Federation (JOIHF) is arduously building an ice hockey team to represent Jamaica in the upcoming winter games. The dream was set into motion over the July 4th weekend, when a team of players – hand-picked from among 2014 summer tryouts – made it all the way to the finals of an exhibition tournament held at the Nottawasaga Inn Resort & Conference Centre in Alliston, Ontario.

In an inspired run, the squad made its way to their first-ever championship, where they were clipped 4-3. The championship birth capped stellar performances in preliminary round encounters where they enjoyed 4-0, 6-1, and 3-2 wins over the Bradford Bulldogs, Vegas Gold and PS101 Prospects, respectively.

The team compromise mainly Canadians with Caribbean heritage. The aim of the tournament was to attract sponsors, to showcase the team’s talent, as well as make known their Olympic aspirations. The JOIHF is persistently seeking sponsorship and hosting tryouts in a bid to realise this dream. The organisation offers two types of player memberships: a Participant membership and an Exhibition Participant membership. The Participant Member is required to be a legal resident of Jamaica while an Exhibition Participant Member is required to be of Jamaican/West Indian descent.

The coaching staff, which added Cyril Bollers last year, is helmed by Graeme Townshend. Townshend, whose resume includes the Grizzlies, Mariners and Bruins, is the first Jamaican-born player in the National Hockey League.

The JOIHF has been a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation since 2012.
