O'Neil Edwards - Voicemail

As if the deaths and violent events of the last five days were not sobering enough, the entertainment fraternity and members of the wider Jamaican society were forced to come to terms with the passing of popular entertainer O’Neil Edwards of the trio Voicemail on May 26. He had been valiantly fighting for his life since May 10 at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH), where he was admitted and operated on after receiving multiple gunshot wounds during an attack from two assailants as he attempted to enter his Duhaney Park, St Andrew home.

The son of Rupee Edwards, a well-known Jamaican recording artiste and producer, O’Neil inherited his father’s passion for music. He had set himself up as an entrepreneur, importing and selling goods, but eventually answered his true calling and pursued a music career with a multi-talented group of singers. What started as a quintet became the trio of Jerome ‘Craig’ Jackson, Kevin Blaire and O’Neil. By 2003, the trio began to actively record with producers, but it was their subsequent association with Danny Champagne of Champagne Records that gave them significant impetus.

It was during this period that the group released the smash collabo Weh Di Time with Delly Ranks and dancer Bogle. This would be the first in a string on dance-inducing hits that stayed true to the group’s “feel good/party” vibes.

O’Neil emerged as the “organizer and the unspoken boss” of the group. On their MySpace page, group member Kevin notes that O’Neil is “the man that while we sleep, he’s there pon the phone calling this person and that person, setting us up to record and all those things. He’s the man in charge”.

One of ten siblings, O’Neil Jason Charles Edwards was born on May 8, 1974. He is survived by Nehalis Nastacia Edwards, his six-week-old daughter, Ingrid, his life partner, his mother, five sisters and four brothers.
